On September 5, 2023, the Bank of Poland issues a 20 zlotych facial silver collector coin under the name “Soviet Aggression against Poland – September 17, 1939”,

During World War II, in its war plan against Germany, the Polish Armed Forces Command assumed the neutrality of the USSR, so only token forces remained near the Polish-Soviet border. Therefore, the unprovoked Soviet aggression did not meet with organized resistance. However, the troops of the Border Protection Corps (CPF) took up the fight. The heroic resistance of the few border posts delayed the actions of the aggressor.

The defense of the Polish state against this incursion involved not only the Polish army, but also civilians, in particular scouts and students. Their participation was a testament to the imperative to defend the Polish character of the eastern borders.

The “Year 1939” medal, which is the source of images for the coin's design, was the work of renowned sculptor Józef Gosławski (1908-1963). The scene is a symbolic representation of the events of September 17, 1939. A Polish soldier fighting against the German aggressor is stabbed in the back by a Red Army soldier.

The inscription on the obverse reads: «WE WRZEŚNIU 1939 NAPADNIĘCI PRZEZ ARMIE NIEMIECKĄ I BOLSZEWICKĄ – MY POLACY – OFIARĄ KRWI BRONILIŚMY WOLNOŚCI LUDÓW, HONORU I RELIGII (IN SEPTEMBER 1939, ATTACKED BY ARMIES GERMAN AND BOLCHEVIK, WE POLISH, PAY WITH BLOOD TO DEFEND THE FREEDOM OF PEOPLES, HONOR AND RELIGION]».

The design arose from a deep desire to comment on the tragic historical moment on the part of the artist, witness of those events. The sculptor could not exhibit his work while he was alive, he kept and stored them in plaster molds and it was until 2009 that his family decided to make the work public.
