On June 30, the Central Bank of Latvia, Latvijas Banka, issued a new silver collector coin with a 5 euro face called “Song Thrills”. This piece is dedicated to commemorating the 150th anniversary of the Song Celebration.

The Latvian national song and dance celebration is a very important cultural event in that country. Since the first celebration in 1873 with 1,000 singers, it has grown into a powerful movement, as nearly 40,000 participants prepare to participate in the XXVII National Celebration of Latvian Songs and the XVII Celebration of Dance. More than 1,600 groups in Latvia and more than 100 in other parts of the world are preparing for the event.

The song (and later also dance) celebration has taken place on average once every 5.8 years. The tradition of the Celebration of Song and Dance is inscribed on UNESCO's Representative List of Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity, being a cultural value recognized worldwide.

The obverse of the coin with a horizontal rectangular shape reflects the characteristic horizontality of a choir on the open-air stage. The shape of the coin is counter-pressed, creating a united, sculptural undulating movement, rhythm. It also presents five multicolor bands that symbolize the ranks of the choir singers, the multitude of voices and the polyphony characteristic of choral music. The selected colors match the shades of Latvian national costumes. The inscription “5 EURO” is placed in the lower left corner.

While the reverse of the coin is monochromatic. The inscription “THE NATIONWIDE LATVIAN SONG CELEBRATION 150” appears on the top band, and the year of issue “2023” is placed in the lower right corner.
