To commemorate the 200th anniversary of the birth of Sándor Petőfi, considered the national poet of Hungary, the Hungarian National Bank has issued a 200 guilder commemorative circulation coin.
Sándor Petőfi (1823-1849) was a Hungarian poet, revolutionary, national hero, and one of the most iconic figures in Hungarian literature and culture. His poems were translated into many languages. In his short life, this internationally renowned poet wrote almost a thousand poems, and was one of the first literary figures to earn a living from his writing. He was the originator of the concept of literary icon. As the embodiment of Hungarian Romanticism, he introduced new themes into Hungarian poetry, such as family poetry, the representation of the Puszta (Hungarian meadows) and the idea of a free world. His exceptional popularity was also due to the fact that he used plain language in his works and incorporated the language of the people into literature. He was one of the main figures of the «Youth of March».
The face side of the coin is identical to the 200 forint currently in circulation, but the theme side shows a modern raster representation of the portrait of Sándor Petőfi drawn by Miklós Barabás, replacing the usual Chain Bridge design. Inside the bead border, the legend “MAGYARORSZÁG” (Hungary) appears on the upper left and, on the lower right, horizontally, the year of minting “2023”. Below, to the left of the portrait, is the official logo for the anniversary year of Sándor Petőfi.
