Today, July 25, the National Bank of Poland (Narodowy Bank Polski) issues a new silver 10 złoty coin for the 600th Anniversary of the granting of municipal rights to the city of Lodz.

Lodz gained municipal rights in the 15th century, when on July 29, 1423, King Ladislaus Jagiello of Poland authorized the founding of the city and granted it a charter of incorporation based on Magdeburg law, also known as German law. The letter was issued in Przedbórz. In this way, the ruler complied with the request of the Bishop of Włocławek, Jan Pella, owner of the estate on which the town of Łodzia was located.

In legal terms, Lodz would be modeled after Łęczyca, then the capital of the Łęczyca Voivodeship. The city's judicial system was determined by a royal charter. The inhabitants were excluded from the jurisdiction of the royal officials and henceforth would only respond to the mayor, and the latter to the bishop who owned the city.
In the letter, the monarch also laid the foundations for Lodz's economic existence.

Lodz remained a small agricultural city, only thanks to decisions made in the 1820s by the authorities of the Kingdom of Poland caused an influx of new settlers and the transformation of the city into a center of the textile industry.

On the reverse is the inscription 600-LECIE NADANIA ŁODZI PRAW MIEJSKICH (600th Anniversary of the granting of municipal rights to Lodz), next to it we see the effigy of King Ladislas Jagiello based on a drawing by Jan Matejko and an image of the 1577 stamp with the Lodz coat of arms.

While on the obverse of the piece the southern façade of the Ludwik Geyer factory (the so-called White Factory) is shown in the foreground, currently the headquarters of the Central Textile Museum of Lodz. In the background, the silhouettes of the Church of the Holy Spirit and the City Hall of Lodz are depicted.
