The Reserve Bank of South Africa has put into circulation since the beginning of the year the Fourth Series of Decimal Coins of legal tender in South Africa.

Apart from the design, one of the great novelties of the new series is that the word "South Africa" appears on one side of the coins and will be minted in all official languages.

The coins are minted using a rotation system in which all the official languages will appear during a certain period. For the next ten years, the languages will alternate annually.

The following number of languages of the different varieties of coins will be minted:

R5: Three languages will be used.
R2, 50c and 10c two languages will be used.
R1: only one language will be used.

 Old and new series

One of the most notable changes is that of the 5 rand bimetallic coin, which abandons the emblematic buffalo as the main animal and replaces it with the southern right whale.

The 2 rand coin has replaced the kudu with the springbuck and changes the edges to give it a more rhomboid shape.

The 1 rand coin replaces the antelope with South Africa's official flower, the protea, and has a new pentagonal border.

The 50 cent coin abandons the sterlicia, known as the bird of paradise, for a real bird, the turaco. This coin has also adopted a hexagonal edge, cutting back on the nine-sided shape it had before.

The 20 cent coin is for another plant, the aloe. Its edge has also stopped being a nonagon and is now a heptagon.

South Africa's smallest coin, 10 cents, says goodbye to the lily and makes way for the bee. Its edge is now an octagon.

The R5 coin maintains its bimetallic alloy, while the R2 and R1 are made of nickel-plated steel. The 50 and 20 cent coins are made of bronze-plated steel, and the 10 cent coins are made of copper-plated steel.
