The Royal Mint continues its collection called "Myths and Legends" with the launch of its second series of coins, belonging to the legend of King Arthur, dedicated to one of its main characters, the eccentric magician Merlin, considered one of the most popular British mythology.
The legendary prophetic sorcerer and trusted advisor to King Arthur himself, is known for his magical abilities in the Arthurian legend, which is why he is part of one of the three coins that complete this collection, the entire series being minted in cupronickel coins, 1 and 2 ounce silver, and 1 and 1/4 ounce gold pieces.
On the reverse of both coins, both the cupronickel and the 1-ounce gold, we have the spectacular design by David Lawrence, in which we see the magician Merlin with an owl perched on his shoulder, which represents knowledge and wisdom, while clutching a magical staff ready to cast spells. All this on the background in which the island of Avalon is represented.
On the other hand, on the obverse of the coins we can see the well-known effigy of Monarch Carlos III, the work of the British sculptor Martin Jennings. The inscriptions surrounding the bust indicate; the face value of the coin (100 pounds and 2 pounds), the year of issue “2023” and an abbreviated Latin legend “DG REX. FD» (Dei Gratia Rex) and (Fidei Defensor) (King by the grace of God and Defender of the Faith).
