The Bank of Hungary issued on November 28, 2022 a 2,000 guilder collector's coin with a face called "City of Székesfehérvár, Romkert National Monument". This coin is the ninth addition to the series launched in 2014 at the initiative of the Hungarian Heritage Institute, which is intended to represent Hungarian national memorial sites.
Székesfehérvár was the political and cultural center of medieval Hungary, the main coronation and burial place of kings. The Romkert (ruined garden) in Székesfehérvár is one of the most important memorial sites of the time when the Hungarian state was founded. According to tradition, the city was founded by Géza, Grand Prince of the Hungarians, in 972. Stephen I of Hungary not only built a basilica on the settlement, but also transformed it into a religious and administrative center. In Fehérvár the coronation regalia were kept, and the treasury and royal archives were also located here. For nearly five hundred years it was a coronation city. He played an important public role in Hungarian history. Until the period of the Turkish occupation, it had been one of the most important cities in the country.
The transformation of the Romkert took place between 1936 and 1938. In 2011, it was inaugurated as a national memorial site, and in 2020 it received the "Memorial Site of the Year" award.
The central motif on the obverse of the coin is a stylized detail of the longitudinal left side of the sarcophagus of Stephen I of Hungary. The cherub motif in the center is bordered on both sides by a twisted plant rosette. On the obverse are the obligatory design elements of legal tender: under the representation of the sarcophagus on the left, the inscription “MAGYARORSZÁG” (Hungary), the mintmark “BP.” in the center the denomination «2000», on the right the year of minting «2022», below the denomination in a circular legend, the letters «FORINT».
The reverse shows an elevated view of the site, depicting the central reception building, the tomb marked with a cross, and a section of the Romkert stone wall to the left. The coin bears the inscription 'SZÉKESFEHÉRVÁR' in a semicircular legend on the upper edge, the words 'NEMZETI EMLÉKHELY' (National Memorial Site) in a semicircular legend on the lower edge, and the letters 'ROMKERT' (ruined garden) below. The common logo of the National Memorial Sites is located on the lower right of the reverse. The designer's master mark, Virág Szabó, is hidden in the stone wall on the left side of the coin.
The coin is minted from an alloy of copper (90%) and zinc (10%). It weighs 18.4 grams and is 37mm in diameter. The print run is limited to 10,000 pieces, all covered in bronze.
