Today, November 7, a 10-euro silver coin with a face dedicated to the figure of Santiago Ramón y Cajal, considered the most famous Spanish scientist in history, has been issued by the National Mint and Stamp Factory. .
The Ministry of Science and Innovation declared the year 2022 as “Year of Research – Tribute to Santiago Ramón y Cajal”. The Royal Mint joins this celebration by issuing a silver coin with a face of 10 euros and metric of 8 reais.
The Spanish doctor and scientist Santiago Ramón y Cajal (1852-1934) is considered the father of neuroscience. In 1906 he received the Nobel Prize in Medicine together with Camilo Golghi "in recognition of his work on the structure of the nervous system".
He was a pioneer in the description of the ten synapses that make up the retina. Thanks to his research on the mechanisms that govern the morphology and connective processes of nerve cells, he developed a revolutionary new theory that came to be called the "neuron doctrine."
On the reverse of the coin appears a portrait of Santiago Ramón y Cajal, made by José Padró and from the private collection of Alberto Jiménez Schuhmacher, and an allegory of his drawings and notes. To your right, the Mint mark. At the top, the face value 10 EURO. Surrounding the portrait, in a descending circular direction and in capital letters, the legend YEAR OF INVESTIGATION SANTIAGO RAMÓN Y CAJAL 2022.
The obverse reproduces the left portrait of His Majesty King Felipe VI. At the top, in a circular direction and in capital letters, appears the legend FELIPE VI REY DE ESPAÑA. In the lower part, between two points, the year of minting 2022. Surrounding the motifs and legends is a ridge of pearls.
