Like Spain, Portugal also issues a collector's coin, in two versions, to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the arrival of the euro in our pockets. Both coins share the face value, 5 euros, but one is minted in silver and has some color notes, while the economic version is made of cupro-nickel.

Most of us know where we were on January 1, 2002, when the euro replaced the escudos, pesetas, marks... of our daily lives. Today, 85% of the population is in favor of the single currency and there is no doubt that it is the most ambitious and successful of all European projects.

The single currency reflects our economic coordination, but above all it reflects our common values and goals. Proof of this is the resilience that the euro has shown in the face of various crises, and which it will undoubtedly continue to show for a long time to come.

Although the euro began to circulate two decades ago, its history dates back to the late 1960s, when several members of the then EEC proposed economic and monetary union in order to control inflation and interest rates. However, political visions had to be aligned and financial obstacles overcome, so it was not until 1991 that the treaty that made the single currency possible was signed. In 1999, three years before it began to circulate in our pockets, the euro began to be used for accounting purposes.

The name 'euro' was chosen in 1995 at a European summit in Madrid, and the euro symbol is inspired by the Greek letter epsilon (Є) and the first letter of the word 'Europe'. The two parallel lines in the middle represent stability. Unlike banknotes, euro coins have a national side that identifies the countries that minted them. In Portugal, the national face was designed by the sculptor Vítor dos Santos and features the royal seals of D. Afonso Henriques, surrounded by seven castles and five corners of Portugal.

The coin, called «20 years of the euro», shows on the obverse, in the upper half, a succession of 20 equidistant circles that reinforce the idea of 20 years, and in the lower half the legend «2002 – 20 years of the euro – 2022”, in an inner concentric circle, a cord formed by a series of lines that represents the economic forces, supported by a succession of twelve hands, which represent the different European communities that support the euro as a strong currency capable of compete with other currencies in the world market, in a complex economic conflict that is foreseen for the future; in the center, a circle with the euro symbol inside, symbolically protected by the protective cord described above.

On the reverse, a succession of eleven equidistant stars symbolizing the founding countries of the single European currency appears in the upper half of the border; In the lower half of the edge appears the legend «Portuguese Republic» and, in the center, occupying the entire central area, the denomination of the coin, with a shield with five stars superimposed on the lower part of the number five of the denomination; The legend “Casa da Moeda” and the identification of the author appear on the lower central edge.
