The German federal government decided in 2020 to mint a series of 100 euro face gold coins called “Pillars of Democracy” in three parts and to issue one collector coin per year in the period 2020 – 2022, with the themes “Unity”. (2020), "Justice" (2021) and "Freedom" (2022).

With the triad of unity, justice and freedom, this series of collector coins has focused on the constitutional program. Dating back to the 19th century, the terms express the core elements of the constitutional state, as laid down in the Basic Law of 1949. In the German national anthem, the terms are used centrally. They represent the German identity and its democratic tradition. Unity, justice and freedom: the symbolism associated with them must be taken care of and ensured precisely for the positive narrative of German democratic history.

Through the issuance of this series of gold coins, the future lines of the German constitutional development of the last 200 years, as well as the elemental values of the European Union, are properly traced and recognized in a contemporary design.

The obverses were designed by the Berlin artist Bastian Prillwitz. The key concepts of the series implement the following motifs:

Unity (2020): St. Paul's Church Frankfurt

Like no other place, the Paulskirche in Frankfurt remains the symbol of the German nation's struggle for national unity in democratic freedom. In design, the building is flanked by the barricade fights of March 1848 and the deliberations of the National Assembly.

Law (2021): Federal Constitutional Court

The Federal Constitutional Court, based in Karlsruhe, represents the rule of law in Germany. The design shows the facade and at the same time the interior of the courtroom with a representation of a sentence pronouncement.

Freedom (2022): Brandenburg Gate

The Brandenburg Gate was the symbol of division, but also of the struggle for unity, and now it is the symbol of freedom throughout the world. The design shows the Brandenburg Gate against the background of the peaceful revolution and the fall of the Wall on
November 9, 1989.

The reverse is the same on all the coins in the series, it is the work of the Berlin artist Andre Witting. It shows an eagle, the words "BUNDESREPUBLIK DEUTSCHLAND", the face value, the year of issue (2020, 2021 or 2022), the twelve European stars and, depending on the mint, its mark "A" (Berlin), "D" ( Munich), "F" (Stuttgart), "G" (Karlsruhe) or "J" (Hamburg).
