The Slovak Mint, Mincovňa Kremnica, has just issued a 20 euro silver collector coin with a face to value the Kysuce Protected Landscape, one of the fourteen protected areas in Slovakia.

Like many mountainous areas in Slovakia, the Kysuce region has been shaped by man over time into its present form. The settlers caused a significant change in the balance between the forest and the non-forest landscape. The region is characterized by a mosaic of forests, pastures, small fields and scattered wooden farmhouses. Human agricultural activities allowed the secondary appearance of plant communities of botanical interest. The originally forested Kysuce region thus acquired increased biodiversity and now features fauna and flora typical of peat bogs, marsh grasses and grasslands.

The local cool climate and oceanic climatic effects have given rise to the presence of several sub-Atlantic plants, in the easternmost fringe. The Kysuce Protected Landscape also has marginal populations of large predators and some protected animals. Bubbling streams, fragrant forests and plants, hints of prairie, charming wooden houses and howling wolves – Kysuce has it all.

The obverse features a common otter at the top and a northern crested newt and sundew at the bottom right and left respectively. To the right of the otter is the coat of arms of Slovakia, placed below the denomination “20” and the currency “EURO”, one above the other. The name of the issuing country, "SLOVENSKO", and the year of issue, "2022", are inscribed on the lower right edge. To the left of the stars are the stylized initials "KL", referring to the coin's designer, Karol Ličko, and to the right, the mark of the Kremnica Mint (Mincovňa Kremnica), made up of the letters "MK" placed between two dies.

The reverse shows two wooden houses with tiled roofs typical of the Kysuce region, in this case from a settlement called Brízgalky. One of them is seen from the front, and the other, on which a sled rests, from the side. Behind the huts are rolling hills, a feature of the Kysuce landscape, and in the distance are the distinctive peaks of Stoh and Veľký Rozsutec. At the bottom left of the design is the inscription 'CHRÁNENÁ KRAJINNÁ OBLASŤ' (Protected Landscape Area) in three lines, and at the top is the inscription 'KYSUCE'.
