The Italian Mint, Istituto Poligrafico e Zecca dello Stato, started in 2020 a new series of coins intended to value its gastronomic and wine culture. In this 2022 there will be two coins that will join the collection, the first will be on June 28 and will have Primitivo wine and Orecchiette pasta as protagonists.
The coin shows on the obverse the Trulli of Alberobello and a characteristic dry stone wall typical of Puglia, both recognized as World Heritage Sites by Unesco, are delimited, on the right, by an olive tree, a symbol of the Puglia region, on the left, by the Pumo di Grottaglie, one of the most representative products of local craftsmanship, and, below, by waves stylized with a dolphin, a recurring symbol in the statues of Taranto, the ancient currency of Puglia. On the right, the signature of the author «M. BONIFACE»; above, the inscription “PUGLIA”; below, "ITALIAN REPUBLIC".
The reverse shows a composition of food and wine products typical of the Puglia region: Altamura bread, orecchiette pasta, an olive branch and a glass of wine. Around and in the field, decorative elements inspired by openwork motifs in the Apulian Romanesque style, taken from the Chair of Saint Elias in the Basilica of Saint Nicholas in Bari. Above, in the form of an arch, the inscription “SAPORI D'ITALIA”; on the right, the «R», identification mark of the Rome Mint; in the exergue, the date "2022", year of issue of the coin, and the value "5 EURO". The coin features colored elements.
