It will be on June 28 when the third US dollar coin of this year belonging to the American Innovation series will be issued. This collection of coins is intended to honor innovation and innovators from each of the States and Territories that make up the United States.

This piece, the sixteenth in the series, represents the State of Kentucky and with it the invention of bluegrass music is recognized. Bluegrass has its roots in traditional English, Scottish, and Irish ballads and dance tunes, as well as traditional African-American blues and jazz. The genre derives its name from the band "Bill Monroe and the Blue Grass Boys", which has been dubbed the "Original Bluegrass Band". Bluegrass historians point to Bill Monroe's first Columbia sessions in 1946 as the advent of bluegrass music as it is known today.

The design features a banjo, an important bluegrass instrument. It is leaning to one side, alluding to the rhythm and movement of the music. The inscriptions are “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA”, “BLUEGRASS” and “KENTUCKY”.

Designer: Christina Hess
Sculptor-Engraver: Renata Gordon

Designed by Justin Kunz and engraved by Phebe Hemphill, the obverse features the same design common to the entire series, featuring the image of the Statue of Liberty in profile and the inscriptions "$1" and "IN GOD WE TRUST" (IN GOD WE TRUST).

The coins in this series show the year of minting or issue, the mint mark and the text “E PLURIBUS UNUM” (out of many, one) on the edge of the coins.
