When Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II began her reign in 1952, the 25-year-old monarch could not have known the kind of challenges that Canada and the world would face, or how much progress she would witness. In many ways, the Queen of Canada has come of age along with this nation, welcoming new and exciting developments and adapting with grace and dignity to an ever-changing world. On the occasion of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II's Platinum Jubilee, the Royal Canadian Mint issues a Proof quality silver coin to commemorate the journey of this modern sovereign celebrating her 70 years on the throne.
The governmental structure of Canada has differences regarding its monarchy. Thus, the inclusion of the famous queen of England as head of the Canadian state and highest law of the country. The reason for this fact is that this nation has not yet requested full independence from the British crown.
The reverse design of the coin, designed by artist Neil Hamelin, features a double portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II to commemorate the historic anniversary of her Platinum Jubilee. In the foreground, presented in three quarters, the sovereign radiates the wisdom that she has acquired in 70 years of reign. Beside her is a younger version of herself in 1952, shortly after her ascension to her throne; the portrait frame is adorned with various maple leaves, which also pay homage to the Queen of Canada.
In both portraits the Queen wears the state tiara of King George IV, which appears on the obverse of Canadian coins issued between 1990 and 2002. This tiara is primarily associated with the sovereign, who first wears it on the day of the coronation, then on the occasion of official ceremonies, including the State Opening of Parliament.
The obverse features the date "2022" and the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the work of Susanna Blunt.
