As I think you all know, Luxembourg's circulating coins must, by law, bear the image or symbol that identifies its Head of State, currently Grand Duke Henri. The national commemorative 2-euro coins issued by Luxembourg to date have virtually all had ties to its royalty, so the appearance of the Grand Duke, in one way or another, was not out of place either.

The question is when the commemorative 2-euro coin is of a common type, like this year's, which celebrates the 35th Anniversary of the Erasmus Programme, and it has to comply with this obligation of including the Head of State in a coin with which it does not have any connection, you have to manage not to squeak the final design.

Once the definitive design that the coin will present has been known, we know how they have resolved this issue, and it is not new, they have already used it previously, it is by including a latent image in which the effigy of its Head of State will appear.

The design of the coin is a combination of two fundamental elements of the Erasmus program: the original intellectual inspiration, Erasmus himself, and the allegory of his influence in Europe. The former is symbolized by one of the best-known representations of Erasmus. The second is symbolized by a bundle of links that cross the coin from one beacon to another, representing the numerous intellectual and human exchanges between European students. As a reference to Europe, some of these links form other stars, derived from the synergy between the countries.
The number 35 for the 35th anniversary rises from the stars in a modern graphic style.

This design, in accordance with the national legislation of Luxembourg, shows the effigy of the Grand Duke as a latent image placed on top.

The announced issue volume is 500,000 pieces, which will be put into circulation on July 1, 2022 jointly by all the countries participating in this issue.

Thanks to Claudy Forys, for the image of the coin.

Common 2 euro commemorative coin for the Erasmus study program

To celebrate 35 years of the Erasmus programme, euro area finance ministers decided that euro area member states would mint a commemorative €2 coin using a common design on the national side.

The public chose the winning design in an online vote. Voters were able to choose between six designs, which had been selected by a professional jury following a design competition among the Member States of the euro area, and chose the design created by Joaquin Jimenez, professional designer of the Monnaie de Paris.

Issuing countries: Belgium, Germany, Estonia, Ireland, Greece, Spain, France, Italy, Cyprus, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Austria, Portugal, Slovenia, Slovakia and Finland.
