In 2022 a commemorative 2-euro coin of a common type will be issued, dedicated to celebrating the "35th Anniversary of the Erasmus Program", in which all eurozone countries that so wish will participate. Except for the microstates (Andorra, Monaco, San Marino and Vatican) the rest have already communicated their intention to participate in the joint broadcast, including Spain, of which today I will provide you with the official sketch and the print run.

35th Anniversary of the Erasmus Program

As a way of recognizing one of the great and indisputable achievements of the European Union, the Erasmus Program, a common commemorative 2 euro coin will be issued in 2022 to celebrate its 35th anniversary. The National Mint and Stamp Factory - Real Casa de la Moneda, joins the celebration with the minting of this coin whose design has been chosen by vote.

On the obverse the image of the portrait of Erasmus of Rotterdam is reproduced on a bundle of links that crosses the central bottom of the coin forming the number 35. Above the image of Erasmus are the legends 1987–2022, ERASMUS PROGRAM, ESPAÑA and la mint mark. On the background are the initials JJ, belonging to the engraver Joaquín Jiménez, author of the design. Surrounding all the motifs and legends, in the outer circular area of the coin, the twelve
stars of the European Union appear.

On the edge of the coin appears the inscription: «2 * *» repeated six times and alternately oriented from bottom to top and from top to bottom.

The volume of issue is 1,000,000 pieces that will be issued on July 1, 2022.

2 euro commemorative common type coins

The issuance of this type of coin is something quite common that has been repeated periodically since 2007, when the joint issuance took place on the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of the Treaty of Rome.

The second common commemorative 2 euro coin is issued in 2009 on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the Economic and Monetary Union; the third, in 2012, on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of euro banknotes and coins; and the fourth, in 2015, on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the EU flag. Up to now there are four emissions of this type, so we will have the fifth this year.

As a general rule, each euro zone country can only issue two commemorative 2 euro coins per year. Exceptionally, it may broadcast a third, provided it is a joint broadcast commemorating important events at the European level.

These coins have a common motif on the national side, which includes the name of the issuing country, as well as the event they commemorate, in the respective language or languages.
