On the occasion of the commemoration of the 450th anniversary of the founding of the port of Nagasaki in 1571, due to the relevance it had in the trade between Portugal and Japan, China and India, during the 16th and 17th centuries, the Casa da Moeda de Portugal started a new series of commemorative coins dedicated to the relations between «Portugal and the Orient». The first one is dedicated to the "Art of Lacquer" and to commercial and cultural relations between Portugal and Japan.
In 1543, three Portuguese arrived on the island of Tanegashima, becoming the first Europeans to come into contact with the Land of the Rising Sun. From the beginning, Portugal and Japan influenced each other in various areas, from technical to artistic, and maintained intense business relationships. One of the most coveted Japanese items was the famous lacquer (urushi), created by master craftsmen with a technique as ancient as it was complex.
The urushi , is a natural polymer, i.e. is a substance that produces the dry film. It is chemically formed by a resin extracted from a bush. The product with which it works is an emulsion of water with an oily substance, its main component being "urushiol", a hydrocarbon extracted from the resin of the tree. Traditionally, urushi has been used in Japan to give strength and durability to simple everyday objects such as bowls, trays, spoons, cases or bowls that, at the same time, were embellished.
On the reverse of the coin, on the left, over the sea, there is a ship inspired by the Nambam screens (where the arrival of the Portuguese to the port of Nagasaki was captured in the form of a painting), on the right there are two representations of Shinto temples at the top and bottom, and in the center a matsu; in the upper part, the legend "Arte da laca" and in the lower right the indication of the author "João Fazenda" and the legend "Casa da Moeda". The version in silver and Proof finish has some hints of color.
The obverse of the coin is divided into two halves. The upper half represents the sea, suggested by the traditional Japanese pattern of fish scales, and the lower half a pine (matsu), symbol of courage, perseverance and longevity, on the left is the legend "Portugal 2021" and on the right the shield of Portugal and the face value «€ 5».
The coin can be purchased in three versions with the same design, one minted in cupro-nickel at its face value, and two in precious metals, one in silver and the other in gold, at obviously higher prices. The silver and gold coins are presented as you can see in the image.
