The honey bee is a characteristic member of the Apidae family. In Slovakia, these bees are the only ones that are raised in hives and produce not only the precious honey, but also pollen, beeswax, poison, royal jelly and propolis used in medicine. Honey bees are also unique because they survive the winter as a colony, maintaining a continuous life cycle. Hence, in early spring they are already acting as important pollinators for agricultural crops and other vegetation.
Bees must visit flowering plants to collect their two essential sources of nutrition: nectar, a source of energy rich in sugars that they need to fly and survive the winter, and pollen, a substance rich in protein that they use as nutrition during their stages of development. Bees are a social insect that stands out for their work organization, community care for their young and the ability to survive unfavorable periods through colony thermoregulation and accumulation of reserves.
The Slovak Mint, Mincovňa Kremnica, has wanted to value this wonderful insect by dedicating a coin to them that represents what for humans is the most important activity of bees, pollination and, at the same time, shows them as a symbol of order and prosperity.
With this coin, issued on July 22, a new series called Flora and Fauna of Slovakia is inaugurated, of which another coin will also be issued this year dedicated to the Wolf. They are pieces of brass with facials of 5 euros. The sale price in Slovakia is 5 euros, the same as its face value.
The obverse of the coin shows three bees on a honeycomb, the lower right of which is overlaid with the Slovak coat of arms. At the base of the design, inscribed in italics, are the name of the issuing country 'SLOVENSKO' and the year of issue '2021', one above the other. Between the image and the name of the country are the mint mark of the Kremnica Mint (Mincovňa Kremnica), consisting of the letters 'MK' placed between two dies, and the stylized letters 'KL', in reference to the designer of the coin 'Karol Ličko'.
The reverse image consists of two flowers with a bee perched on the largest of them. At the top of the design, which appears in italics one above the other, are the coin denomination "5" and the currency "EURO". The inscription "Včela medonosná" (Honey Bee) appears in a semicircle at the bottom.
