Announced for the first days of next July, we already know the design of the first commemorative 2 euro coin that Belgium will issue this year. Dedicated to the "Centenary of the constitution of the Belgian-Luxembourg Economic Union (BLEU)", this coin will not go into circulation, the 155,000 pieces of which the issue consists can only be purchased, those of BU quality, predictably in two coincard versions ( 75,000 of each), and then 5,000 in Proof quality in its corresponding case.

The national side of the coin features the effigy of King Philippe of Belgium together with that of Grand Duke Henri of Luxembourg. To the right are the outlines of the two countries, Belgium and Luxembourg, together with the initials of both countries “BE” and “LUX”, and in a vertical line the commemorative legend in English “ECONOMIC UNION”. While below the effigies appear the year of the Union "1921" and the year of minting "2021", as well as the mark of the director of the Belgian mint, Ingrid Herzele (the coat of arms of the municipality of Herzele), and that of the Holland mint in Utrecht (the caduceus of Mercury). Also below but to the right are the initials "LL" of the designer of the Monnaie Royal de Belgique, Luc Luycx.

The Economic Union of Belgium and Luxembourg, abbreviated as BLEU, is an economic union between the two countries created by a treaty signed on July 25, 1921, entering into force on December 22, 1922. According to the terms of the treaty, the border Economic was lifted and the Belgian franc and Luxembourg franc were fixed at a fixed parity (although revised in 1935 and 1944) establishing a monetary union, which existed until the introduction of the euro.

The original treaty lasted fifty years and expired in 1972; this was extended for ten years in 1982 and again in 1992. On December 18, 2002, the two countries and the three regions of Belgium signed a new agreement. It has been seen as the precursor to the Benelux Union, which was established as the Benelux Customs Union in 1944. While many BLEU objectives have been subsumed by the Benelux Union, and later the European Union, it still has some relevance to be able to decide more precise measurements.
