The Bank of Hungary will issue a 2,000 guilder coin on Monday 3 May to commemorate the 125th anniversary of the inauguration of the Millenniumi Földalatti Vasút (Millennium Underground Railway), commonly known as the Kisföldalatti (small subway). It is a rectangular coin with a special aged finish. The coin was designed by the artist Balázs Bitó in collaboration with the Hungarian Museum of Science, Technology and Transport.

In Budapest, on May 2, 1896, the Millennium Underground Railway was inaugurated, which was the first underground tram in Europe. The subway built for the Hungarian Millennium was one of the greatest novelties of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy. Even Francisco José I of Austria took a trip on it. Avant-garde architectural solutions were used in its construction, including the industrial technology of reinforced concrete. A mechanical and automated safety equipment, used on the railroad, prevented the cars from colliding. The original carriages, which underwent several renovations, remained in use for 77 years until the railroad was modernized in 1973, which was unprecedented in the world. This underground railway was included in the world heritage list in 2002 along with Andrássy Avenue.

The central motif on the obverse features an engraving of one of the Millennium Metro stops based on a drawing from the 18th century. The representation of the stop clearly shows the uniqueness of the shallow subway, that is, it is not far from the surface. The technical representation of the subway station is enhanced by the figures dressed in period clothing. On the right at the top is the legend "MAGYARORSZÁG" (Hungary), below the face value "2,000 FORINT" divided into two horizontal lines. At the bottom of the coin, on the left, is the mint mark 'BP'.

The reverse shows an underground railroad car with wood paneling as the central motif. Above, in two horizontal lines, appear the letters "MILLENNIUMI FÖLDALATTI" (millennial metro) and "VASÚT" (railway). Below these letters is the year "1896" on the left, which refers to the date the Kisföldalatti was inaugurated, and the year of minting "2021" on the right. The brand of the coin's designer, the applied artist Balázs Bitó, appears in the form of copper letters screwed into the side of the car.

The coin is minted on an alloy of copper (75%) and nickel (25%). It weighs 27 grams, its size is 39.60 × 26.40 mm and it has a smooth edge. The issue volume is limited to 8,000 pieces.
