We continue to review the US $ 1 coins from the "American Innovation" series to be issued in 2021, with which the US Mint intends to honor innovation and innovators from each of the States and Territories that make up the country.
By the end of the year, on an exact date yet to be determined, the twelfth series coin corresponding to the State of North Carolina will be issued, with which it is intended to recognize the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the first public institution of higher education in the United States. Inaugurated in 1795, it is the only public institution that granted degrees in the 18th century.
The reverse design features a stack of three textbooks where "FIRST PUBLIC UNIVERSITY" can be read on the spine of the central book. On top of the books is a knowledge lamp and olive branches curve around the edge of the design.

Designed by Justin Kunz and engraved by Phebe Hemphill, the obverse features the same design common to the entire series, featuring the image of the Statue of Liberty in profile and the inscriptions "$ 1" and "IN GOD WE TRUST" (IN GOD WE TRUST).
