Together with experts, we will get closer to three physico-astronomical phenomena: the Milky Way, the Black Holes and the Neutron Stars. Starting from something very small, a coin, we will become familiar with the infinitely large and we will even reach galaxies that no human being has ever seen.
The first coin in the series, shaped like an S, a shape similar to that of our galaxy, is dedicated to the Milky Way. The story he tells us about the cosmos also features surprising twists.
The ancient Greeks associated the milky band of light that we see when we look at the cloudless night sky with Heracles, who as a baby sucked on the goddess Hera's breast with such force that she withdrew it from her mouth, spilling her milk across the sky. . The interpretation became more scientific in 1610, when, with the help of a telescope, Galileo Galilei discovered that the Milky Way is actually made up of countless individual stars. By then, Nicolaus Copernicus had already dismantled the belief that the Earth, and not the Sun, was the center of the universe, but Galileo also proved that the Sun was only one of the many stars in the Milky Way. The worldview was wavered again in 1920, when Edwin Hubble proved that the Milky Way is just one of many galaxies.
The combination of the convex and concave surfaces on the obverse of the coin results in a silver S-shaped surface on which the Milky Way is depicted. The angular dimensions of the galactic coordinate system show the position of the Sun in relation to the rest of our galaxy. The position of the Orion Arm, in which our solar system is located, is also marked. Also the positions of the astronomical phenomena Cygnus X-1 and the Crab Pulsar, which play a special role in the other two coins in the series.
