Continuing with the series that highlights the most important episodes of the great expedition started by Fernando de Magellan in the 16th century that led to the first circumnavigation trip to Earth, on April 14 the third coin of the series is issued, in which the tragic death of Fernando de Magallanes is represented on the island of Mactan.The first circumnavigation voyage, initiated by the Portuguese navigator Fernando de Magallanes, is one of the greatest achievements in the history of mankind, in which the relationship between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans was revealed and it was shown that the world was a spherical reality .
To commemorate this great epic, carried out from 1519 to 1522, the Portuguese Mint has created a series of four collectible coins signed by Luís Filipe Abreu, each representing the most important event of each year in that expedition. After the issuance in 2019 of the first under the name of "Partida 1519", the second in 2020 with the name of "El Estrecho", this year's is called "Mactan 1521". The series will be completed in 2022 by the coin called "Completion 1522".
It was on the island of Mactan, in the Philippines, that Ferdinand Magellan lived his last moments, paying a high price for his audacity. However, the death of the navigator did not end his epic undertaking, which was completed in 1522 by Juan Sebastián Elcano. In 2022, the INCM will issue the fourth and last commemorative coin in this series dedicated to the last stage of the circumnavigation.
The coin called «Mactan 1521» presents on the obverse the portrait of Fernão de Magalhães Guerreiro, bordered by the legends «2021 Portugal», «Circum Navegação» «1519-1522», in the lower left quadrant is the face value «7, € 5 ».
On the reverse is a representation of a scene from the Battle of Mactan (Cebu, Philippines) where Ferdinand Magellan was assassinated, bordered at the top by the legend "Fernão.de.Magalhães", and at the bottom the legends " INCM - LF ABREU "(Luís Filipe Abreu, author of the design) and" Mactan 1521 ".
This coin with a face of 7.5 euros can be purchased in three versions with the same design. One minted in silver with Proof quality, another in gold in the same quality and the one that can be obtained at face value, in silver of 500.
