The Swiss Mint, Swissmint, has just issued the third coin in the "Swiss Forest Animals" series, which this year features the common fox or red fox (Vulpes vulpes). This series composed of three bimetallic coins, all of them with 10-franc facials, has ended with the issuance of this last piece. The design corresponds to the Swiss artist and graphic designer Naomi Andrea Giewald.

The red fox belongs to the family of canid predators and is unmistakably similar to both dogs and wolves. Foxes are found on almost every continent, and the forest is long past their only habitat. The red fox is known for its twilight and night forays through the gardens of large cities. Its eyes can clearly see its surroundings in the dark, by turning its ears it can locate a screeching mouse more than 100 meters away, and its unique sense of smell is 400 times stronger than ours. These attributes make him an adaptable survivor who likes to rummage through our bins for food.

The body of an adult fox measures just under 1 m and can reach a height of up to 50 cm due to its relatively short legs. Their modest body weight, between 6 to 7 kg, is camouflaged by their thick fur. In the month of January, a fox usually looks for its mate. Female foxes give birth to 3 to 5 cubs after a gestation period of 50 days. During breeding, male foxes act as purveyors, bringing food to the burrow. Besides mice, insects and berries, a hare or a young deer are also on the menu.
