Continuing with the review of the new coins presented by the British Royal Mint for this 2021, today we will see a commemorative 50 pence piece dedicated to John Logie Baird. Born in Scotland in 1888, Baird was a prolific inventor and electrical engineer, famous for his early television prototypes. However, he would never have imagined the impact of his work and how it would ultimately change society and entertainment around the world.
At the time, Baird was one of several inventors who were in a melee race to be the first to successfully develop the technology to transmit and receive moving images. Eventually his experiments paid off and Baird became the first person to show publicly on television. In some ways, this was Baird's first real test of success. The modern television pioneer had a number of inventions and, for the most part, failed businesses behind him, including a jam-making business in the Caribbean!
Now marking the 75th anniversary of his death, tribute is being paid to Baird and the visionary work that brings generations of families together every day. This 50 pence coin honors the inventor and his creation with a design that captures the key milestones of his life. Design company Osborne Ross has presented these milestones in the form of transmission lines, radiating from a central point.
“The equipment Logie Baird used for his first broadcast is not recognizable to our modern eyes as a television, so we looked for another way to express the idea of broadcast. The silhouette of the telecommunications tower at Crystal Palace, south London, along with the radiating circles indicating a transmission, gave a graphic illustration that worked well with the shape of the coin.
“We felt that using the glowing lines as a timeline of Logie Baird's life and accomplishments would help give the viewer a second level of reading. We work closely with The Royal Mint's Product Design department, using their expertise to add nuance and subtle modeling to the concept and bring it to life in three dimensions, "commented its designers.
