This week, specifically on Thursday, October 8, the second 2-euro commemorative coin of Germany was put into circulation in this 2020, which reflects a historical event that occurred on December 7, 1970, when Chancellor Willy Brandt knelt before the memorial for the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, where thousands of Jewish victims of the Nazis died during World War II. The coin commemorates this fact for which Germany apologized for crimes committed during the war. The issue consists of 30 million pieces under the name "50th Anniversary of the Warsaw Genuflection."
Designed by artist Bodo Broschat, the coin depicts the moment when the then German Chancellor kneels as a gesture of humility in front of the Warsaw Ghetto Heroes Monument. The composition is illustrated in reference to the 1943 ghetto uprising, considered the most famous attempt at Jewish resistance against the Germans. A 7-branched candelabrum, one of the oldest symbols of Judaism, presides over the scene. About this act Willy Brandt would later write in his memoirs: "On the brink of the abyss of German history and under the weight of millions of murdered, I did what men do when words fail."
On December 7, 1970, during Chancellor Willy Brandt's visit to the remains of the ghetto in the city of Warsaw, he carried out a spontaneous and unexpected gesture that was forever linked to his image. After listening to the explanation of the massacre that took place during the Jewish uprising and placing a wreath in front of the monument to his memory, the Chancellor knelt in tribute to the victims. The gesture, which astonished those present, was highlighted the next day on the front pages of the main newspapers around the world.
