The Bank of Latvia announces the issuance for October 6 of a new coin dedicated to the art of Modernism in Latvia in the 1960s, known as the Thaw period and associated with the political developments of that time. The thaw brought hope for a greater degree of freedom and well-being; and culture and art also saw the opportunity for a relative revolution. Design and architecture was where modernism could flourish.

To show the characteristic trends, the coin features graphic elements of the works of some renowned authors of the time: the architect Marta Zigrīda Staņa and the artists Zina Ulste, Gunārs Kirke and Uldis Razums. The different graphic means of expression show the unifying phenomenon of modernism.

Fragments of the graphic design of a 1968 office paper (Horse) created by Uldis Razums and a fragment of the cover of the album "Džeza festivāls 68" (1968 Jazz Festival) created by Gunārs Kirke, are presented on the front of the coin. The inscription LATVIJA is placed vertically in the upper left, while the year 2020 appears in the upper right.

A fragment of the decoration of the coffee set "Saulīte" (the Sun; 1964-1970) designed by Zina Ulste and a fragment of the plan of a residential building on the main street of Riga, developed by Marta Zigrīda Staņa, Imants Jākobsons and Harolds Kanders, are the motifs on the reverse. The inscription 5 euro is displayed vertically in two lines along the right edge.
