Continuing with the series that highlights the most important episodes of the great expedition started by Fernando de Magallanes in the 16th century that led to the first circumnavigation trip to Earth, on October 20 the second coin of the series is issued, alluding to the discovery and crossing of the navigable strait that joins the Atlantic and Pacific oceans through the American continent, which was named in honor of the Portuguese navigator.
The first circumnavigation voyage, initiated by the Portuguese navigator Fernando de Magallanes, is one of the greatest achievements in the history of mankind, in which the relationship between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans was revealed and it was shown that the world was a spherical reality .
To commemorate this great epic, carried out from 1519 to 1522, the Portuguese Mint has created a series of four collectible coins signed by Luís Filipe Abreu, each representing the most important event of each year in that expedition. After the issuance in 2019 of the first under the name of "Partida 1519", this year the second is issued under the name of "El Estrecho".
The reverse of the coin features two penguins, animals that would have been sighted for the first time by Europeans during this journey in 1520, an episode that gave rise to the name of the species Magellanic Penguin (Spneniscus magellanicus). Surrounding the entire design are the legends: in the upper semicircle "Fernão.de.Magalhães"; In the lower semicircle, on the right "Estreito 1520", on the left the mint mark and the author's name "INCM - LFABREU".
The obverse shows a stylized composition of the path followed by the expedition started by Fernando de Magallanes. Surrounding the entire design are the legends: "2020 Portugal", "Circum Navegação" and "1519-1522". At the bottom left the face value "€ 7.5" is shown.
This coin with a face of 7.5 euros can be obtained in three versions with the same design. One minted in silver with Proof quality, another in gold in the same quality and the one that can be obtained at face value, in silver of 500.
