This latest evolution of an icon takes Philip Nathan's acclaimed interpretation of Britannia and adds four innovative security features to create the safest coin in the world. These additions decorate and protect the coin, as the micro-text that borders the design says: DECUS ET TUTAMEN, (AN ORNAMENT AND A SAFEGUARD). At the bottom left of the design, under Britannia's dress, there is a trident depicting her naval history. As the viewer changes their perspective, this trident becomes a lock, emphasizing the safety of the coin.
This award-winning Britannia design was created by Philip Nathan and was first coined in 1987. In one hand, Britannia holds an olive branch symbolizing peace. In the other, he holds a trident as a reminder of the nation's power and a nod to Britannia's naval connections. With his Corinthian helmet and Union flag shield at his side, Britannia's strength is apparent to all who behold.
The obverse shows a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Jody Clark. The inscriptions on the coin, displayed around the effigy are, its face value of 2 pounds, as well as a legend in abbreviated Latin "DG REG FD" (Dei Gratia Regina Fidei Defensatrix) (Queen by the Grace of God and Defender of the Faith).
