We already have the design, the presentations and the issue volumes for the second commemorative 2-euro coin to be issued by France in 2020 under the name "Medical Research". I anticipate that the coin will not go into circulation, following the path started by the Monnaie de Paris in 2019 with the coin dedicated to celebrating the «60 Years of Asterix».
The information on its design, the exact date of issue, the circulation, its distribution, as well as the non-minting of coins for circulation was given on September 8, 2020. According to Joaquín Jiménez, who in July 2020 was appointed General Recorder of Coins of the Monnaie de Paris, there are many symbolic elements in the design. “This piece illustrates an allegory of man's victory over disease. I wanted this drawing to express itself fully in the "European space" and that is why it exceptionally overflows in the crown of 12 stars. Thus, countries are united in the face of adversity ”.
On the obverse of the coin, a female face in a sphere with the word "UNION" observes fragments of DNA, which appear to be seen under a microscope. The oblique position of the face in relation to the object of investigation, represents the investigation that dominates the infinitely small to study it and find solutions to diseases. The initials of the issuing country "RF" (French Republic) are in the upper right, while the French mint mark (Horn of plenty), that of its director, Yves Sampo (Pentagon with the initials AGMP-YS ), that of the General Coin Engraver, Joaquín Jiménez (Double square), as well as the year of minting "2020" are in the lower left.
The BU version of this coin will be available in 3 different blisters. Their designs are complementary and have a unity between them, in particular thanks to the blue, white and red color code that uses the colors of the French flag. Each of these blisters will be offered in 100,000 copies, so the total production of the BU version of Medical Research of 2 euros will be 300,000 copies. The first blister has the word “MERCI” (“thank you”) as it has been the most used term during this health crisis. This blister pack evokes gratitude in multiple languages: French, German, English, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, and Dutch.
The second has the word “HEROS” (“Heroes”) since healthcare personnel and researchers are the true heroes of everyday life and play a central role in our fight against the virus.
While the third blister represents the essential values that emerged during this crisis. The words dedication, commitment, benevolence, protection and generosity form the word "UNION".
A BE (Belle Proof) version with 10,000 copies will also be offered.
The French Monetary Institute continued its tribute to health personnel, scientists and research with this new coin. After creating a medal at the end of spring as a thank you to the professionals who were present during the crisis of spring 2020, this recognition is deepened with this coin that, in addition, for each piece sold, 2 euros will be donated to the Fondation de France, an independent administrative agency that was established by the French government in an effort to stimulate and foster the growth of private philanthropy and private foundations in France.
The expected issue date is October 6 and as I mentioned at the beginning, this coin will not go into circulation.
