The Eudyptes warhami or Chatham Penguin is an extinct crested penguin about five centuries ago discovered in the Chatham Islands, an island archipelago some 500 miles east of New Zealand. Believed to have existed until Polynesians came to the islands about 450 years ago and hunted it en masse, the Chatham Islands crested penguin was among the largest crested penguins ever to exist.

Dedicated to this species of penguins already disappeared, like many others by the hand of man, a coin consisting of an ounce of silver has just been issued, showing us an image of a pair of these specimens in their natural habitat.

This detailed premium silver coin was designed by New Zealand artist Dave Burke. Two crested penguins from Chatham Island appear under a stormy backdrop, very common in the climate of the people of the Chatham Islands. The birds are surrounded by a koru design arch, typical of Maori culture. The legends correspond, at the top to the name of the bird in English "Chatham Island Crested Penguin" and the bottom to the face value "One Dollar".

The obverse of this coin includes the name and effigy of Queen Elizabeth II created by British sculptor Ian Rank-Broadley. The year of issue "2020" is shown below the image of the Queen, the weight and purity of the silver is shown above. The name of the issuing country "New Zealand" appears to the left of the monarch.
