The Royal Mint has just issued the second coin in the series "Innovation in science" in which it brings us closer to a character, Rosalind Franklin, who did not get all the recognition she deserved despite being one of the people who participated decisive in the discovery of the structure of DNA. On the centenary of her birth, this coin is intended to remind this illustrious chemist and crystallographer who deciphered part of the secret of life.

Rosalind Franklin's brilliant mind and tireless dedication enabled breakthroughs in multiple fields. Best known today for her DNA research, Franklin was a world authority on the chemical structure of viruses. Died at 37, she was unable to enjoy the enormous success of her work.

The coin has been designed by David Knapton, whose composition is inspired by the historical inaccuracy and lack of credit of Rosalind Franklin's role in discovering the structure of DNA. The motif represented with printing techniques of the time, shows the name of Franklin arranged vertically, along with the first representation of DNA, taken from Photo 51.

The obverse shows the traditional image of Queen Elizabeth II created by Royal Mint engraver Jody Clark. The face value of 50 PENCE (pence) and the year of issue, 2020, are listed around the image of the monarch.

Characteristics

Face value: 50 pence
Alloy: Cupronickel
Diameter: 27.3 mm
