The next issue that the FNMT has prepared for us is the fifth and last series of Spanish coins within the "Europe Program" dedicated to the "Epochs of Europe", under the theme "Gothic". This issue includes two coins with the same design, one silver and one gold, representing an image of the Cathedral of Toledo, a portrait of María de Molina, and a detail of one of the stained glass windows of the Cathedral of León. If everything goes according to plan, the coins will go on sale on September 7.
Motifs represented in the coins
The Cathedral of Santa María de Toledo, a Catholic church located in Toledo, is one of the three 13th century Gothic cathedrals in Spain and is considered the "Magnum Opus" (the masterpiece) of the Gothic style. It was started in 1226 under the reign of Ferdinand III and the last Gothic contributions were made in the 15th century, ending in 1493 the vaults of the central nave already at the time of the Catholic Monarchs.
The Cathedral of Santa María de León is one of the most relevant examples of the Gothic style in Spain. Famous for its stained glass windows, with a stained glass area of at least 1,764 square meters and containing most of the originals. It is considered one of
the largest and best preserved medieval stained glass collections in Europe.
Maria de Molina. A woman of great importance in the Middle Ages. She was Queen Consort of Castile during the reign of her husband Sancho IV "El Bravo" (son of Alfonso X el Sabio), as well as double regent with her son Fernando IV and grandson Alfonso XI. A woman who contributed to three different reigns throughout her life, and whose political action was decisive for the continuation of the Crown of Castile and the consequent drift towards the kingdom of Spain. She was more than a queen, mother or grandmother of kings, she was a woman with a great sense of status, who knew how to win the respect of her subjects and the consideration of the rest of the monarchies of the time.
On the reverse of both coins, three motifs are reproduced, framed in ovals. The left oval reproduces a view of the main facade of the Cathedral of Toledo; the right oval contains an image of María de Molina, belonging to a painting that is preserved in the Santa María la Real de Huelgas Monastery, in Valladolid; the lower oval reproduces in color a detail of the stained glass window Triforio Poniente, Panel Tr. XVII, b4 of the Cathedral of León. At the top of the coin, horizontally, in two lines and in capital letters, the value of the piece, 10 or 200 EURO, and at the bottom right, the mint mark.
On the obverse, in the center of the coin and within a circle, the
effigy of His Majesty the King Don Felipe VI is reproduced, bearing the insignia of Captain General. On the left, in a circular direction and in capital letters, the legend FELIPE VI REY DE ESPAÑA; On the right, the year of minting 2020. At the top of the coin, in a circular direction and in capital letters, the legend GOTHIC. At the
bottom of the coin, the common mark adopted by the countries that issue coins dedicated to the Europe Program. A five-pointed star occupies the entire bottom of the coin.
