Today, June 30, the Bank of Greece has begun to distribute the first of the two commemorative 2-euro coins that it has announced for this 2020. It is the one dedicated to the "2,500 years of the Battle of Thermopylae". Coins for collectors in Bu and Proof grades, presented in blister and box respectively, will be issued on July 6.

In 480 BC, the Greeks, under the command of Leonidas, king of Sparta, attempted to stop the advance of the vast Persian army at the narrow pass of Thermopylae. The sacrifice of the Greeks, following Leonidas' refusal to surrender his weapons with the famous defiant retort "Come and take them" ("Μολών λαβέ"), is a timeless inspiration for all nations fighting for freedom.

As a central motif of the coin designed by Georgios Stamatopoulos, a Corinthian helmet of a hoplite warrior is adorned with its typical horsehair plume, next to which the palmette appears, as a mark of the Greek mint, the year of issue "2020" and the monogram of the author of the design. Surrounding everything there is a circular fretboard and the legends of the issuing country “ΗΜΟΚΡΑΤΙΑ ΔΗΜΟΚΡΑΤΙΑ” (Hellenic Republic), and that of the commemoration “2500 XPONIA AΠO TH MAXH TΩN ΘEPMOΠYΛΩΝ” (2500 years of the battle of Thermopylae).
