The Ufficio Filatelico e Numismatico de San Marino already has everything ready to issue on March 5 the first 2 euro commemorative coin 2020 dedicated to the «500th anniversary of the death of Rafael Sanzio», Italian painter and architect of the Renaissance. New diffused images already show us an almost real coin and the wallet where this coin will be presented, which since the first sketches have been known has liked and much among collectors around the world.
The currency for which initially an emission volume of 53,000 pieces was announced, remains at 54,000, according to the latest information provided. This reproduces a part of the painting "Madonna with Bambino", painted by Rafael Sanzio.
Initially considered as a work of Giovanni Santi, most critics today share the attribution to his son Rafael, recognizing the first masterpiece of Urbino's painter, then little more than a teenager.
The fresco depicts the Madonna in profile sitting while, absorbed in reading a text, gently caresses the sleeping baby on her knees. The rarefied atmosphere and light colors refer to the models that circulated in the court of Urbino, while the image draws attention for the delicacy and ingenuity of the figures, also intimately linked by the contrast between the light and the shadow that accentuates the familiar and suggestive nature of the composition.
