Since the Bank of Lithuania announced in December 2018 that one of its 2 Euro commemorative coins of 2020 would be dedicated to «The Hill of Crosses», great expectations were awakened to know the design that would be represented and even more before the possibility that it was vetoed by the European Commission, because it is an issue with clear religious connotations, since Christian crosses would foreseeably be represented.

Today, February 18, the Bank of Lithuania has shown the sketch of the coin, which, as expected, presents many crosses, although according to them, as part of the crafts and popular culture of the country. Anyway, the approval by the European Commission, as far as I know, has not yet occurred, so we could still have last-minute surprise.

The design by Rytas Jonas Belevičiu shows the Hill of Crosses, full of fragments of wooden and forged crosses, which symbolize Lithuanian artisanal creation and its popular culture. The creation and symbolism of crosses in Lithuania are included in the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity since 2001. At the top of the composition, the inscription LIETUVA (LITHUANIA), the year of issuance of the 2020 coin, at the bottom, the inscription KRYŽIŲ KALNAS (THE HILL of THE CROSSES), next to the mint mark of the Lithuanian Mint «Lietuvos monetų kalyklos».

The currency is announced for the fourth quarter of this year, will have an emission volume of 500,000 pieces, of which 5,000 in BU quality will be presented on a coincard.
