The Bank of Estonia announces that the 2-euro commemorative coin that celebrates the "200th anniversary of the discovery of Antarctica" is issued on Monday, January 27. The link of the discovery with Estonia is the Baltic-German sailor Fabian Gottlieb Benjamin von Bellingshausen, born in Saaremaa, the largest island in Estonia, being one of the first to spot Antarctica and document this event, something that is clearly reflected in the inscriptions presented by the coin, which counts as the main motive with the Vostok corvette, in which Admiral von Bellingshausen sailed around the world.
The coin design shows Vostok as the main motive in which Admiral von Bellingshausen sailed around the world. The inscriptions surrounding the vessel in the upper area are «Fabian Gottlieb Benjamin von Bellingshausen» and the name of the issuing country and the year of issuance «EESTI 2020». Under the ship appears the inscription «ANTARTIKA 200» alluding to 200 years after the discovery of the so-called sixth continent, Antarctica.
The volume of issuance for this currency is 750,000 pieces of which 10,000 in BU quality will be put up for sale on the day of issuance, presented on a coincard.
My opinion is that we are facing the prettiest 2-euro commemorative coin minted to date by Estonia, but not only that, but also the best-designed among the more than 300 we have issued among all countries. Coins representing boats sow look great and if they are large sailboats they do even more.
