Another of the numismatic novelties put up for sale yesterday, January 23, by the Swiss Mint, Swissmint, is the second currency of the "Swiss Forest Animals" series, which features the European hare (Lepus europaeus). This series consists of three bimetallic coins, all of them with facials of 10 francs. The design corresponds to the Swiss artist and graphic designer Naomi Andrea Giewald.
The European hare (Lepus europaeus) is a mammal of the family of rabbits and hares. Its original habitat is Europe and Asia, but it has been introduced in many different areas and can now be found in Australia, New Zealand and North and South America. This shy lonely and mostly nocturnal animal prefers warm, dry and open areas. During the day, it hides in shallow burrows. If he feels threatened, he huddles on the ground, where he camouflages perfectly thanks to the color of his fur. He only runs away at the last minute, and is an excellent sprinter who uses a sophisticated technique. Over short distances, it can reach speeds of up to 70 km / h and can jump to heights of up to 2 meters.
European adult hares are between 40 and 70 cm long and weigh from 2 to 6 kg. Its fur is brownish gray on the back and creamy white on the bottom. His ears are pale gray with black tips. Its tail is black at the top and white below. Hares are herbivorous, and their diet includes herbs, roots and tubers. In winter, they will also nibble the bark of trees, shoots and branches.
