Anul acesta Muzeul de Istorie Naturală din Sibiu comemorează 170 de ani de la nașterea marelui naturalist sibian Mauritius Hieronymus von Kimakowicz-Winnicki (1849-1921).
Programul activităților comemorative desfășurate în onoarea lui Mauritius von Kimakowicz cuprinde prelegeri tematice, etalarea materialelor tip din colecția malacologică Kimakowicz și dezvelirea basoreliefului realizat de artistul mexican Carlos Marin.
În 1886, Mauritius von Kimakowicz devenea custodele Colecţiei Zoologice a Muzeului de Istorie Naturală înfiinţat de Societatea Ardeleană de Științele Naturii din Sibiu, cu excepţia colecţiei de Lepidoptere. Devenind custodele Colecţiei Zoologice a Muzeului a inclus şi colecţia sa particulară în patrimoniul muzeului. În calitatea de custode al colecţiilor de zoologie ale Societăţii a lucrat în special la înnoirea şi mărirea colecţiilor: în anul 1899, a donat muzeului 300 piese aparţinând la 180 de specii de animale; a donat coleoptere din Transilvania; actuala colecție de Ortoptere a muzeului a fost iniţiată de Mauritius von Kimakowicz care a donat 2600 exemplare colectate din Transilvania; meritul alcătuirii colecţiei de Diptere revine aceluiaşi Kimakowicz, care a donat 600 specimene colectate din Transilvania şi Istria; a contribuit alături de A. v. Sachsenheim şi Dr. D. Czekelius la realizarea colecţiei de peşti din Marea Adriatică; este în mare măsură responsabil pentru numărul actual de amfibieni şi reptile prezente în patrimoniul muzeal; a realizat lucrări de taxidermie pentru colecţia Ornitologică a muzeului; a donat colecţiei de mamifere un craniu de elefant african şi un dinte de narval.
Activitatea sa publicistică în domeniul ştiinţelor naturii a fost caracterizată, în primii de ani, prin lucrări dedicate cercetărilor malacologice ce au fost publicate în revista Societăţii Ardelene Verhandlungen und Mitteilungen des Siebenbürgischen Vereins für Naturwissenschaften dar şi în jurnale din străinătate mai ales din Germania. Mauritius von Kimakowicz a fost membru corespondent al Societăţii de Cercetări ale Naturii Senkenberger din Frankfurt. A colaborat şi întreţinut corespondența cu numeroşi oameni de ştiinţă din ţară şi străinătate.
În 1907 a devenit custodele colecţiei arheologice a Baronului Brukenthal şi trezorierul Muzeului Brukenthal.
În momentul decesului, survenit la vârsta de 72 de ani, era conform necrologului: Directorul Muzeului de Istorie Naturală; Directorul Societăţii Ardelene de Ştiinţele Naturii din Sibiu; Custodele colecţiei arheologice din cadrul Muzeului Brukenthal.
Invitați de onoare la eveniment vor fi doamna Ioana Kirculescu von Kimakowicz, strănepoata domnului Mauritius von Kimakowicz și domnul Dr. Miklos Szekeres, renumit malacolog.

This year, the Museum of Natural History in Sibiu commemorates 170 years since the birth of Mauritius Hieronymus von Kimakowicz-Winnicki (1849-1921), one of the grate naturalists from Sibiu.
The program includes thematic lectures, materials from the Kimakowicz Malakological Collection and the unveiling of a bas-relief by Mexican artist Carlos Marin, representing Mauritius von Kimakowicz.
In 1886, Mauritius von Kimakowicz became the custodian of Zoological Collections (Natural History Museum in Sibiu) set up by the Transylvanian Society of Natural Sciences of Sibiu (Siebenbürgischen Vereins für Naturwissenschaften). Becoming the custodian of the Museum's Zoological Collection also included his private collection in the heritage of the museum. As a custodian of the zoology collections of the Society, he worked in particular to revitalize and enhance them: in 1899, Moritz von Kimakowicz donated to the museum 300 pieces belonging to 180 species of animals; he donated Coleopters from Transylvania; the Orthoptera Collection of the Museum was initiated by him by collecting 2,600 specimens from Transylvania; the merit for the museum Diptera collection rests with the same Kimakowicz, who donated 600 specimens collected from Transylvania and Istria; he contributed alongside A. v. Sachsenheim and Dr. D. Czekelius to the museum's Adriatic fish collection; also is the merit of v. Kimakowicz for the current number of amphibians and reptiles present in the museum heritage; he did taxidermy work for the museum Ornithological collection; he donated to the mammalian collection an African elephant skull and a narwhal tooth.
His journalistic activity in the field of natural sciences has been characterized in the first years by works dedicated to malacological research that have been published in the journal of the museum, Verhandlungen und Mitteilungen des Siebenbürgischen Vereins für Naturwissenschaften, but also in journals from abroad mainly from Germany. Mauritius von Kimacowicz was a correspondent member of the Senkenberger Nature Research Society in Frankfurt. He has collaborated and maintained correspondence with numerous scientists from the country and abroad.
In 1907 he became the custodian of the archeological collection of Baron Brukenthal and the treasurer of the Brukenthal Museum. At the time of death, according to the obituary, Mauritius von Kimakowicz was: Director of the Museum of Natural History from Sibiu; Director of the Transylvanian Society of Natural Sciences from Sibiu; Custodian of the archaeological collection within the Baron Brukenthal Museum.
Guests of honor to the event are Mrs. Ioana Kirculescu von Kimakowicz, granddaughter of Mauritius von Kimakowicz and Dr. Miklos Szekeres, renowned malacologist.
