Of the 2 euro commemorative Italian coin of this 2019 dedicated to the «500th Anniversary of the death of Leonardo da Vinci» we have several possibilities to include it in our collections, since L'Istituto Poligrafico and Zecca dello Stato issues it in different formats and qualities , on different dates. Let's meet them.
During the past 22nd and 23rd of March the Milanofil, a fair dedicated to philately, numismatics and collecting in general, was held, for which the IPZS put on sale a booklet showing a detail of the fresco of the vault of the Sala delle Asse of the
Sforzesco Castle, which Leonardo da Vinci built in 1498. On the left, in the foreground, is the sketch created by the engravers of the Casa de la Moneda of the Italian State for the coin for the 500th anniversary of the death of Leonardo Da Vinci. 1,000 units were put on sale from this brochure. Although it is not a numismatic product it can be interesting to accompany the coin.
As for what the currency itself is, the first one that went on sale was the one issued in proof quality and in individual format, on January 25. A total of 5,000 pieces were put on sale at the price of 20 euros. The coin is presented as you can see in the image below. You can also get in this quality within the 2,000 eurosets Proof 2019 that will include the other eight regular currencies of the current year, plus one of 5 euros in silver dedicated to the centenary of the death of Cesari Maccari. The price will be € 115 and will be put on sale on November 15.
Next May 17, 20,000 leaflets are issued at the price of 18 euros, which includes the commemorative 2-euro coin in Flor de Cuño quality, accompanied by the 1-euro Italian coin, the design of which reproduces the famous "Vitruvian Man" of Leonardo da Vinci, illustrative of the ideal of proportions of the human body, which is exhibited in the Gallery of the Academy of Venice.
Finally, on June 14, the IPZS puts on sale for the first time in its online store 2,000 rolls of 25 coins at the price of € 58. I suppose that the same date will be distributed in the branches of the Bank of Italy for the rest of the coins until the 3 million of the issue is completed.
The coin motif shows a detail of the painting "Lady with l'ermellino" (Lady with an ermine), by Leonardo da Vinci (Czartoryski Museum in Krakow). On the left are the legend "Leonardo" and the initials of the author, Maria Angela Cassol, "MAC", as well as the logo "RI", an acronym of the Italian Republic; on the right, the
mint mark , "R", of the Mint in Rome and the dates "1519-2019", which refer to the year of Leonardo's death and the year of issue of the coins.
The twelve stars of the European flag appear in the circular crown of the coin.
