Giving continuity to the series of coins that is being issued at European level under the name "Ages of Europe", this year they are broadcast under the theme "The Renaissance." The Portuguese INCM, meanwhile, has issued officially today the coin with facial of 5 euros with which it participates in this European initiative, being able to acquire in different metals and prices, under the same design.

The Renaissance is a period between the fourteenth and seventeenth centuries characterized by the recovery of the references of classical antiquity, both at the level of thought and the arts and aesthetics. 

The Portuguese coin, designed by the sculptor Eloísa Byrne, presents the loxodromic curve, discovered by the Portuguese mathematician Pedro Nunes, in 1537, with a decisive importance for the navigation and the cartography of the terrestrial globe. Previously it was believed that, marching on the earth's surface with a fixed course, that is, forming a constant angle with the meridian, the line traveled was a maximum circle. In other words, a ship that followed this route would go around the world and return to the starting point. Nunes pointed out the falsity of this concept by showing that the curve traveled approaches the pole, around which infinite turns could be made, without ever reaching it. 

On the obverse is the National Shield, in the background there is a European star and at the base the symbol of the series «Europe». The piece has inscriptions and legends "Portugal", the year of issue "2019", the face value "€ 5", "INCM" and the name of the author "E. BYRNE. "

The images in the upper part correspond to the cupronickel currency, which can be acquired at its face value in Portuguese banks. Below we see the versions minted in silver, and in gold.
