At the beginning of the 20th century, during the First World War (1914-1918), many countries issued their coins in the form of stamps. In the first independent states of Ukraine was done similarly: in National Republic of Western Ukraine and the People's Republic of Ukraine. There, these money seals were called shahivky. The stamps were issued in values of 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50 shahiv.

These shahivky were printed on 11½ perforated paper. Due to the scarcity of the metal coins were not minted, since it was destined to the manufacture of ammunition and weapons for war that the country was facing at that time. Each stamp-coin had the Ukrainian coat of arms printed with some words proving that such shahivky could circulate instead of coins and that their use to use them as postage stamps was not allowed. On July 18, 1918, the Government of the independent Ukraine authorized the issuance of the first series of stamps, also called shahivky with almost identical designs.

Under the theme "Centenary of the issuance of the first stamps of Ukraine", in reference to those we have just heard, the Bank of Ukraine issues a coin with a facial of 5 grivnas minted on alpaca or German silver on September 25.

The obverse shows above the emblem of the state of Ukraine, the name of the issuing country and the year of issue, 2018. The main motif is the seal of 30 shahiv. The face value, 5 hryvnas the logo of the Mint House of the National Bank of Ukraine and a text commemorating the issuance of these stamps-coins in 1918, complete the composition.

On the back is a color image of the seal of 50 shahiv along with allegorical texts to the centenary of the issuance of these.
