Martin Luther published in 1517 his famous and controversial, then, "95 Theses", directed against the practice of selling indulgences (liberation of sin given by the church) and emphasized that man achieves salvation not through the church and their rituals, but in faith in God. At the end of 500 years of what was a letter of Martin Luther addressed to the Church of Rome, in which he discredited the papal doctrine on indulgences, the Bank of Ukraine issued on September 15 a coin with facial of 5 and hryven minted in an alpaca alloy to commemorate the ephemeris.

The reverse side of the coin on a black and red background shows a crucifix symbolizing the church, on the right is the image and the name of Martin Luther, who carries in his hand the sheet on which he wrote his thesis; to the left and vertically the text in Ukrainian "500 Years of Reformation".

The obverse shows a stylized sheet of the Bible in German made by Martin Luther, a card with the Ukrainian decorative ornament that symbolizes the participation of Ukraine in the European process of creating a new church. Arranged to the right of the cross are five points that are the quintessence of theology: ONLY / written / only / FE / only / Grace / only / CHRIST / only / GLORY TO GOD. As is customary in all Ukrainian currencies, the national coat of arms of Ukraine, the year of issue, the face value and the logo of the Mint of the National Bank of Ukraine are also represented.
