The Bank of the Republic of Colombia issues a coin to commemorate the bicentennial of independence of Cundinamarca, proclaimed on July 16, 1813. Cundinamarca is today one of the thirty-two departments that, together with Bogotá, Capital District, form the Republic from Colombia.

On the obverse the coin depicts the image of Antonio Nariño with the texts "Bicentennial of the Independence of Cundinamarca-1813-" and "The triumph of ideas", which corresponds to the message used by the Cundinamarca governorship as a motto of the acts of commemoration of the bicentennial.

On the reverse side is the image of the current Cundinamarca shield, one of the most representative official symbols of this department, including the text "República de Colombia", the face value of the coin and the year of issue.

The commemorative coin of legal tender has a nominal value of $ 5,000, is silver in color (copper and nickel alloy), has a diameter of 35 mm, a thickness of 2.70 mm, a weight of 21.75 grams and is sold at their face value. It can also be purchased in a special case, which contains a folding with information, for $ 14,000. The Bank will initially issue 20,000 pieces and will be able to mine an additional 30,000, depending on the demand of the public.

At the request of President Antonio Nariño, on July 16, the Cundinamarca Electoral College declared the absolute independence of Spain. The declaration of the Supreme Junta of Santafe, on July 20, 1810, had been self-governing and the same junta, six days later, had made a new autonomist pronouncement.

To Antonio Narino corresponded to design the flag and the shield of the new republic by commission of the Serenísimo Electoral College, as well as the cucarda of the army and the presidential band. The new symbols were sworn on August 31 in a solemn ceremony held in the Church of St. Augustine. By decree of 15 of September they were promulgated and officially replaced those of Spain. The shield, with slight modifications, and the flag are those of Cundinamarca since then.

Thanks to Guillermo Leon for the notice of the issuance of this currency.
