Coins from the bygone empire of Ancient Rome are found all around Europe, Northern Africa, and the other parts of the world conquered by the Romans. Spreading its commercial empire was one of the many ways in which Rome expanded its borders and grew its wealth.
Today, we are left with only the remnants of that mighty empire. Yet when a hoard of them are discovered, it’s always big news in the archaeological, anthropological and numismatic communities.
Found in Spain
One area that long saw Roman occupation was modern-day Spain and the Iberian Peninsula. A number of fantastic treasures dating back to antiquity have been recovered in the country. In fact, just last April, there was a miraculous discovery of over 600 coins from Ancient Rome in the Sevillaregion of Spain.
Earlier this July, another cache of 40 to 50 coins dating to the second century CE. was found in southern Spain. They were uncovered at a mine as part of regular operations and excavation. The reigns of emperors Nero and Trajan are represented in the hoard, but that’s not the only context the discovery provides. Researchers have also been able to better piece together the historical boundaries of long-lost cities and settlements in the area thanks to the discovery of this coin hoard. Naturally, a collection of so many coins in one place suggests not only human development and settlement of the area, but also clues about the people who lived in this part of Spain over 1,800 years ago.
The media in Spain is reporting that this new hoard will be displayed at the Mining Museum in Minas de Rio Tinto for the time being, allowing the public to enjoy and learn about Spanish history until the coins are purchased by someone else.
