In 1992 and culminating a process of nearly 4 years of talks, the I Ibero-American Series was issued. Already at that time the mere fact that 14 countries agreed to coin a coin in common, was a historical, cultural, economic and political landmark.
In the first nine series the coins maintained the metric of the so-called Royal of eight or hard silver, a piece that for centuries was of universal use and which was coined on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean, as now happens again, in the lands of America and the Iberian Peninsula. Since the X Series began to use the Real Metric to four.
A unique feature of these series is that each participating country allows its national coat of arms to appear reproduced in the currencies of other countries, a fact that had not occurred during the twenty-five centuries of Numismatic History.
The anversos of the coins show, therefore, the national shield of the issuing country surrounded by the shields of the rest of the participating countries.
The XI Ibero-American Series "Encounter of Two Worlds", which is coined in this 2017, is dedicated to the theme "Natural Wonders", and is scheduled to be released and launched in Spain on 24 July.
