In his day I presented the two 2-euro commemorative coins that Greece will issue in 2017, dedicated to the "Philippi Archaeological Site", and the "60 Years of the death of Nikos Kazantzakis." At that time, the images I showed you were of very poor quality, today, thanks to the companion Euromunter, I can show you good images with which to get an idea of how the coin will look and how it will look in our collections.
Archaeological Site of Philippi
The obverse shows a portion of the vestiges of the basilica B of the city of Philippi, located on what appears a Macedonian mosaic decorated with geometric grechas and a border of small waves. Above is the year of issue "2017", below left is the monogram of the artist, Georgios Stamatopoulos, while on the right appears the palmeta as a mark of the Greek mint. In the upper part, the legend "ΑΡΧΑΙΟΛΟΓΙΚΟΣ ΡΟΩΡΟΣ ΝΩΝ" (Philippi archaeological site) and the legend of the issuing country "ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΗ ΔΗΜΟΚΡΑΤΙΑ" (Hellenic Republic) are inscribed on two arched lines set to the outer edge of the nucleus.
60 Years after the death of Nikos Kazantzakis
The obverse shows a profile image of Nikos Kazantzakis. On the left the palmette appears as a mark of the Greek mint, while on the right on the shoulder of the image, the monogram of the artist of the Greek mint, Georgios Stamatopoulos. On the left, the legend of the issuing country "ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΗ ΔΗΜΟΚΡΑΤΙΑ" (Hellenic Republic) followed by the year of issuance "2017" and the commemorative legend "ΝΊΚΟΣ ΚΑΖΑΝΤΖΆΚΗΣ" (Nikos Kazantzakis) is inscribed on the left, in two arched lines adjusted to the outer edge of the nucleus.
Finally, 750,000 coins of each are issued, at dates not yet announced.
