The first quarter of this year, dedicated to the Effigy Mounds National Monument, located in Iowa, was issued on February 6 as circulation currency. The coin belongs to the series "America the Beautiful Quarter", dedicated to emblematic places and national parks of the United States.
The design depicts an aerial view of the mounds known as the Bears in Progress Group. Entries are "EFFIGY MOUNDS," "IOWA," "2017," and "E Pluribus Unum." Coin designed by Richard Masters and engraved by Renata Gordon.
On the obverse of all the coins in the series, President George Washington is depicted in a restored version of the original portrait used in 1932 in the Washington Quarter.
