Ceramics Shipibo - Konibo

The Shipibo-Konibo lives mainly in the basin of Ucayali river in the Amazon. Their pottery is made primarily by women and has ancient origins. Archaeological research shows that the tradition of cumancaya ceramics, developed on the banks of the Ucayali between 800 and 1600 AD, has great similarities to the Shipibo-Konibo contemporary, confirming the cultural continuity in the region for over 1200 years.

Clay, red and black color, white, is combined with tree apacherama ashes and dust of old ground vessels. The mixture is kneaded in rolls that are twisted to form new parts. This technique replicates the movement of the cosmic anaconda Ronin, creating rivers and forests twining on itself. Before burning, the pieces are painted with complex geometric designs, called Kene, which seem to wrap ceramios with a hypnotic halo of light and movement. These designs come from skin blemishes of cosmic anaconda and jars communicate their powerful energy of transformation.
