On 7 June the Bank of Ukraine issued a coin with facial of 5 Hryven, coined on an alloy of nickel silver, commemorating the start of the measurements, 200 years, the so-called Struve Geodetic Arc ago. This was the first accurate measuring of a long segment of terrestrial meridian that helped define and measure the exact shape of the Earth.

The reverse shows a portrait of astronomer Friedrich Georg Wilhelm Struve, right inscriptions: Struve Geodetic Arc / 1816 - 1855 - years during which were carried out measurements; to the left of the portrait a stylized composition where a map pointing the two points of measurement are spaced at 2822 kilometers appears.

Obverse: above a small State Emblem of Ukraine, left on semicircular inscription - Ukraine, under which - the year of issue 2016, below its nominal value of 5 Hryven / and logo of the National Bank of Ukraine; on dark background instruments used for the measurement and the names of the countries through which passes the arc of Struve: Norway, Sweden, Finland, Russia, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Belarus, Ukraine and Moldova.

Struve Geodetic Arc, World Heritage

The Struve Arc is a set of triangulations stretching from ten countries, over 2,820 km from Hammerfest (Norway) to the Black Sea. Composed points of triangulation conducted between 1816 and 1855 by the astronomer Friedrich Georg Wilhelm Struve, this arc allowed for accurate measurement of the first long segment of a meridian.

This helped to define and measure the exact shape of the Earth and played an important role in the advancement of geoscience and conducting topographic mapping. It is an extraordinary example of scientific collaboration among scientists from different countries, as well as an example of cooperation between several European monarchs for a scientific progress. The original arc consisted of 258 main triangles and 265 fixed points. The site inscribed on the World Heritage List includes 34 of the original fixed points made by different means drilled hole in rock, iron cross, burial mounds and obelisks.
